Memories 3 - Kalaw

KALAW - My place of Birth

I was born on a full moon in Kalaw, Shan State in 1951. I was born with a thin veil (skin) over my face, and the Shaman said I would be able to see spirits and things beyond earthly existence.

My parents, my younger brother, Pyee and I moved to Rangoon when I was five, so I did not get to know Kalaw very well. However, I do remember a little of Kalaw.

I remember when my brother was born in 1953 the electricity came on for the first time in Kalaw, and how suddenly bright our little house seemed.

I remember the cool clean air of the hills.

I remember the pretty English flowers, pansies, flocks and hollyhocks in our garden.

I remember when during one night our puppy, Sleepy, was carried away by a leopard.

I remember the hill tribes in the market.

I remember the delicious sticky rice in bamboo and the sweetest strawberries in the world.

I remember the hills, pine forest, mist and the smell of wood fire.

I remember how peaceful it was.
